Class Art Based Research Methodologies

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The course aims to introduce a set of research methods relevant to the implementation of projects in the field of contemporary art and artistic research in an academic context. It aims to provide students with the tools to identify and communicate, problematize, and develop work methods that are appropriate to their artistic goals. Based on the idea of translation, it seeks to encourage students to reflect on the practical, ethical, and philosophical implications of their work, as well as to develop a deeper awareness of the links between context, theory, and practice; and to prepare students to apply this knowledge and these skills in the planning, systematization, and execution of an artistic research project aligned with criteria of quality and originality.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

The UC seeks to provide students with specific methodologies for research with and through art, providing an understanding of the current landscape of artistic research, its definitions and related issues on a national and international level. The aim is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge that will enable them to pursue their projects with academic rigor. As such, they will be required to adopt critical thinking tools and develop reading, writing, and documentation skills, as well as an understanding of their own artistic and technical process so that it can be actualized and translated, explored and shared in a relevant way in artistic and academic circles.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The teaching methodology of the course is based on a theoretical-practical approach, through the presentation of content in class, with the aid of audiovisual materials, bibliography, and access to support materials previously prepared by the teachers (presentations, guides, lists, references). There will be practical exercises focused on research and the development of a Master's project: identifying a question; formulating a title, subtitle, and keywords; reading, translating, and writing; writing notes and a bibliography; producing an essay; there will be time for tutorial guidance and group work discussion.
