This course has been prepared for a professional master's degree in teacher training, bringing together issues from the History of Education and the Sociology of Education. Its main goal is to allow a critical and comprehensive reading of the process of construction of the mass school (or the school for all, if you prefer) and the underlying problems, especially in terms of the production and reproduction of social inequalities.

1. Historical formation and functions of modern education systems Written culture, schooling and literacy - the portuguese case in a comparative perspective. 1.2. The characteristics of the school model built. The grammar of the school. 2. The First Republic in Portugal: From generous intentions to the disappointment of the realities. 3. Education in the Estado Novo: between the literacy of all and (re)education of elites. 4. Times and trends of educational policies in democratic Portugal. 5. Europeanization, globalization and new forms of transnational governance of education systems. 6. Teaching computer science and teaching professionalism: problems and challenges.

Objectives
At the end of the course unit the learner is expected to be able to: 1. identify different stages in the historical and social development of the Portuguese educational reality, theoretical references and authors; 2. analyse changes and continuities in the thought, in the orientations and in the educational systems, by relation with the temporality of the scientific knowledge and the regional and global contexts where the educational systems are inserted; 3. interpret and evaluate information, from different sources and in different media, about the subjects covered by the curricular unit
