    The scope of this unit encompasses the development of a research methodology essential to the attainment of high-quality results. Namely, it seeks to transmit a set of methods, of paramount importance to the research process, and, to familiarize the student, not only with such methods, but also, in an immersive way, with their application in real context of dissemination and review of scientific results. The pertinence of this unit is then clear: It constitutes a foundation, theoretical and practical, where all further research work is set upon.

    Syllabus description Principals of Research in Informatics Sciences Selection methods for research topics; Research process/cycles based both on critical and on creative thinking approaches Critical analysis of related literature Critical thinking; Planning and implementation of literature research; Ethics in science Research methodology approaches Research design Result gathering and verification Research philosophy Tools and methodology for analysis and validation Statistics tools: simulators, emulators, test beds/testing environments; Research methodologies adequate to each phase of the research process; Results' dissemination Content organization; Writing and edition rules; Dissemination types, events and associated rules Presentation of quality results

    Objectives

    The units' main purpose is to assist in the development of critical thinking and of scientific methodology, as well as to provide skills concerning quantitative and qualitative methods for both research and analysis. Theoretical and practical aspects, related to triggering a research process, are addressed, namely, how to best analyse and select research themes, analysis and validation methodology. Hence the students acquire knowledge concerning adequate statistical tools. The following skills are to be acquired:   1. Better understanding of the international research environment in Informatics Sciences; 2. Understanding the need to ensure ethics in research and development of science/scientific results; 3. To be capable of critically analysing related work; 4. To understand both systemic and methodological approaches to a research process, as well its different phases; 5. To understand the need and be capable of adequately presenting/disseminating results.

    Use of practical examples related to reviewing research articles suggested by the students during the class and feedback for their specific documents for a reseach proposal.
