In this course unit seven themes will be presented from the many that are related to civil protection and range from "Civil Protection as a factor of social cohesion and economic development" to "Communication and disasters". These are considered core issues and are intended to be discussed in a context different from that which occurs in other curricular units.

Without prejudice to others on topics that the dynamics of time and processes can justify in future, in the first edition of the course is planned to hold the following seminars, always with one or more guest speakers from renowned specialists, academics, researchers and institutional managers. Moderation will be made by the teacher responsible for the curricular unit or individuality also invited for this purpose.

Objectives
Objectives
Carry out a series of seminars presented by researchers and experts with recognized competence in the field of civil protection, emphasizing innovation and scientific progress on key issues in order to incorporate in the course perspectives and actual experiences to complement reflection by the students. It is intended to deepen the students cross knowledge in critical areas of civil protection and test their skills and their competences to a better understanding, as well as to train their capabilities to deepening, of them. At the end of this curricular unit, students must demonstrate specific knowledge and a critical review of the topics covered, as well as their ability to gather, interpret and synthesize relevant supplementary information about them. This is made by the producing of duly justified and referenced summary reports, which will be the base elements in the assessment.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
For each seminar, personalities of recognized merit in theme will be invited. The session continue under the moderation of the responsible UC professor or a guest moderator, with the possibility of questions and answers at the end of the session. Within a maximum period of 10 days after each seminar, each student will present a report, in a “Scientific article” format, with personal assessment and investigation regarding the topic. The “Scientific article” will have a maximum of 8 pages and will be evaluated by the professor. Between three consecutive seminars, there will be a class dedicated to the presentation of reports in the classroom. The assessment will be continuous without resorting to a final exam. Each student will deliver a minimum of 4 reports and the final classification will result from the arithmetic average of the three best classifications obtained in the various reports delivered (80%) and oral presentations (20%).
