Presentation
The idea of ‘Artistic Research’ in these terms is relatively recent in the university context. It appears on the fringes of the more recognisable specialisations in specific arts, such as projects and objects in ‘theatre’, ‘choreography’, ‘animation’, ‘installation’, ‘performance’, ‘sound composition’. By emphasising the idea of ‘research’, we want to highlight the process, thought and artistic experimental composition. Our aim with this seminar is to offer a space for cultural and artistic interaction between different approaches, allowing us to isolate affections, scores, or theses and develop them into objects that can be shared with more than one. The composition formulated and developed over the semester can be individual or group work and presented live, in audiovisual format, or as a plastic composition. In any case, the descriptive memory of the process will show a progression and experience that allows us to speak of ‘research’.

We’ll begin with an introduction to the most recent discussions around the idea of Artistic Research, presenting the Vienna Declaration, the Frascati manual definition, the Society for Artistic Research and artistic research networks, among some of the programs that are proliferating under the name Artistic Research, or Arts-Based Research in European universities. The reading of ‘On techno-aesthetics’ (reading and discussion) will set the tone for some contemporary aesthetic-political discussions. Emphasising the ideas of Aisthesis and technical acceleration. The introduction to the notion of ‘programme’ in Philosophy (Deleuze/Guattari 1972) and Performance Art (Fabião 2009) will initiate practices, such as the Modus Operandi AND (Eugénio 2019) and the formulation of individual or group projects. Ethnographic and field research methodologies, such as field notes, thick description, auto-ethnography, and visual anthropology, will support the projects.
