Presentation
This unit focuses on developing the knowledge on brain structure and function, and making references to the scientific and technical advances which allow the evaluation and functioning of the brain. It encompasses the domains of cell biology and biochemistry. It is an important unit as basic study for further post-graduate studies in neurosciences.

Objectives
Objectives
The program of this Curricular Unit focuses on developing knowledge of the functioning of the brain, making reference to the technical advances that allow the evaluation function and perception of neural function. In Neurobiology will also investigate the functional organization of the nervous system: central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, neurons and glia. From a cellular and molecular perspective, will be given particular attention to the structure of the neuron and the form of communication between different neurons, the synapse, as well as the capacity for communication between neurons and glial cells. In relation to the synapses, we will study the different types of neurotransmitters entailed, as well as their cellular and physiological effects. The mechanisms of interaction and interpretation of the world regarding sensorial and cognitive brain functions will also be addressed.
