    Animal Cell and Tissue Technology is a tool of modern biotechnology involving several disciplinary areas. Culture media, facilities for the culture of animal cells and tissues and various tools for cell characterization are covered, particularly in the area of human health. This curricular unit introduces the basics of animal tissue culture as well as the historical background, culture types, maintenance and characterization tools involved in this process. Furthermore, it also focuses on animal tissue culture facilities, on biosafety guidelines for cell culture in in vitro conditions and on ways to avoid contamination.

    Objectives

    Introduce and develop basic concepts, addressing the main technological methodologies involving cell culture. Highlight the basic theoretical and instrumental principles, as well as laboratory applicability. Address the theoretical foundations of the methods, equipment and characteristics, use and analysis of results. These fundamentals allow the acquisition of skills for practical laboratory execution, making possible the identification of similarities and differences between methodologies, as well as the definition of strategies for minimizing potential risks. The laboratory practices allow the development of technical skills fundamental to the culture of animal cells and tissues.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The teaching-learning process include theoretical explanations with interaction between teachers and students, project-based learning, flipped classrooms, and Design Thinking.   Evaluation is conducted continuously and consists of two components: theoretical component (TC) and laboratory component (LC). The TC is assessed through two midterm exams, or a comprehensive exam, and a group project. The LC assessment consists of continuous evaluation that include completion of mini-questionaries (30%), report writing (30%), a practical test (20%), and a theoretical test (20%). The final grade is calculated using a weighted average: 50% (TC) + 50% (LC), and a minimum grade of 9.5 out of 20 is required in each component for passing. This comprehensive evaluation approach ensures a balanced assessment of students' performance in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the course.   Students may opt for non-continuous evaluation, which consists of a final exam
