This course, "Sound for Documentary," explores sound design and audio techniques essential to documentary filmmaking, with a focus on capturing, editing, and post-production processes tailored to documentary constraints. The course emphasizes practical skills, from recording with field recorders to post-production workflows, audio repair, dialogue editing, and mixing. Students will work with film excerpts and exercises to understand how sound enhances storytelling in different documentary styles, such as observational, talking-head, and experimental. Further, this unit will introduce concepts of mixing for surround sound formats, preparing deliverables and understanding industry standard specifications.

Syllabus
The course is structured as follows: Week 1: Introduction to sound in documentary, aesthetics, and production constraints. Weeks 2-4: Recording techniques (Mixpre 10, wireless mics, IFB outputs, timecode). Week 5: Post-production workflow, Pro Tools setup. Week 6: Dialogue editing fundamentals. Week 7: Noise management and audio repair with tools like Izotope RX. Week 8: Sound editing principles. Week 9: Sound design and music editing. Week 10: Foley for documentary production. Weeks 11-12: Re-recording mixing, introduction to surround sound, and final mixing deliverables. Additonal Weeks for Feedback on semester projects

Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to: Apply field recording techniques suited for documentary production and learning to operate Mixpre10 and SD 833 field recorders Understand and implement audio post-production workflows, including sound editing, repairing, and mixing. Using Protools and other audio software such as RX, Krotos in the post-production context Analyze the aesthetic choices in sound design for documentaries. Prepare final audio deliverables for various media formats (broadcast, cinema, web).

Teaching methodologies and assessment
This course incorporates hands-on exercises, collaborative team work, and the use Protools to simulate real-world scenarios. Students analyse sound aesthetics through film excerpts and gain practical experience with field equipment (Mixpre 10, Sound Devices 833). The course also includes tools such as Izotope RX for noise management, Krotos Studio for Foley creation, and EUCON surfaces for mixing, enhancing both technical and creative abilities During the course, we will also briefly discuss the practical uses of AI/ML in postproductions and potential ethical and rights-related concerns.
