Syllabus
Concepts of language and its functions: representationalist and communicative views. Biological foundations of language: physiological and anatomical structures. Sociodiscursive interactionism and language in use. Text and discourse analysis: cohesion, coherence, and intentionality. Text comprehension and interpretation. Textual practices: reading and writing techniques. Development of critical thinking through language. Oral and written argumentation: types of arguments, connectors, and discursive strategies.

Objectives
Upon completing this course unit, students are expected to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the nature and functionality of the Portuguese language, acknowledging its physiological, cognitive, social, and discursive dimensions. They should develop skills in the analysis and production of oral and written texts across various genres and contexts, with a focus on meaning-making and critical language use. Students will be able to apply writing, interpretation, and argumentation techniques, linking them to educational and social practices, thereby fostering critical thinking and effective communicative action.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
The course will employ active, student-centered methodologies: interactive lectures, reading workshops, study visits, text analysis, guided debates, and group work.
