Class Analogue Photography and Black and White Lab II

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The course consolidates and deepens the knowledge introduced in Lab PB I.  Through an approach centered on practice, knowledge about the equipments, the working of the photographic process and silver gelatin and silver materials is deepened. Fiber papers and the procedures needed to preserve gelatin and silver materials are introduced. Discourse and technique are stimulated and culminate in the creation of a body of work consisting of a body of work printed in FB paper.

    Syllabus

Reviewing camera controls - Interaction between sensitivity, aperture and speed. Consequences that the choices made have on the final result and their relationship with the speech. Comparison of silver gelatin papers (RC and FB) - Introduction to fiber paper; FB vs RC. Stabilization and tonners Spectral sensitivity - Films with a sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation close to that of the human eye, films with lower spectral sensitivity and films sensitive to wavelengths to which the human eye is not visible.  Pulling and reducing film - A deeper understanding of the relationship between incoming light, developing time and image characteristics.  Introduction to the zone system - Analog sensitometry and the practical approach to it introduced by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer. Introduction to the Zone System. Final assignment - Production of a body of work on a topic of the student's choice.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The learning objectives are consolidate and deepen the knowledge and skills developed in Analog Photography and Black and White Laboratory I. Students will once again practice the exercises designed to understand the camera's controls and deepen their knowledge of the practice of analogue black and white photography with exercises to understand: the consequence on the result of the relationship between the amount of light received by the film and the development time; spectral sensitivity; visual transformation by chemical means and stabilization of the silver image. The students also have contact with analog sensitometry through an introduction to the Zone System. The stimulus to photographic discourse continues to be present with the creation of a body of work.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The availability of books and materials for creation opens up a field of creative potential and experimentation. Carrying out the proposed exercises allows you to understand and internalize the functioning of the equipment and materials in order to use them safely and appropriately for discursive purposes.
