    In view of the context that characterizes contemporary society, marked by the demographic evolution of the aging of the population and since social work is a professional area whose action takes place, with significant expression, in the scope of issues associated with the elderly, this Curricular Unit assumes a very significant relevance in the preparation of new professionals.. The study of gerontology, as an area of high scientific interest, and as a field of knowledge that seeks to provide answers to current challenges, is increasingly assumed as a discipline inseparable from social work.  In this course, students have the opportunity to develop and acquire specific skills for a more qualified and appropriate social intervention in the context of aging, old age and the elderly.

    1. Emergence and construction of gerontological knowledge. 2 Conceptual approaches to old age and ageing (different ages, ageism and social stereotypes about old age and older determinants of ageing, theories and models of ageing). 3. Protection systems in old age: the role of institutions and the family in supporting the elderly (social responses for the elderly in Portugal, the family in the care of the dependent elderly). 4. Health and well-being in old age (quality of life of the elderly, functional capacity, rehabilitation and psychosocial intervention in situations of dependence, autonomy, environment and assisted living). 5. Construction of new forms of sociability in the ageing process and in old age (family and interpersonal networks, support and neighbourly relationships, forms of participation and good practices). 6. Gerontological Intervention- Role and Professional Practices in the field of Social Work. 7. Development of research in gerontology.      
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    . This course has as main objectives: - Locate gerontological knowledge with reference to global demographic changes; - Be able to identify and reflect on the main theoretical-conceptual approaches related to the aging process today; - Know and know how to discuss the main issues related to the condition of the elderly person; - Consider the gerontological intervention taking into account the planning methodology, the elaboration of diagnoses, the dynamization of active and participatory processes of the elderly to enhance citizenship in the elderly in national and local projects.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching: Theoretical-scientific sessions: use of expository, interrogative and participatory methodologies. Students are expected to present papers on their individual and collective research experiences with the help of new technologies. Hands-on sessions with guests with significant and diverse experiences. All these experiences presuppose the development of reflexivity in students
