    In addition to the theorizing that comprises development, from the founding theorists to contemporary ones, and the operationalization procedures that are indispensable in the analysis of social inequalities and the formation of interest groups, this CU will focus on the means and experiences of research with an impact on the analysis of Portuguese society.

    S1: Class and Social Status. The problem of social, economic, professional, cultural, political/ideological, symbolic, ethnic, religious, lifestyle, gender, family, social exclusion, urban and rural exclusions and inequalities;       S2: Power and power relations in groups, organizations, professions (associations and orders), companies, unions, parties, NGOs, institutions (civil, military, religious) and elites;                   S3: The structural-functional and (neo)liberal theory of social stratification; S4: The (neo)Marxist theory of social classes;  S5: The (neo)Weberian theory of social classes;  S6: Lifestyles as external signs of class; S7: Class identity and preconditions for collective action; S8: Studies on social classes in Portugal. Social change and the analysis of inequalities that fall into different specialized areas of sociology.

    Objectives

    LO1: Introduce the problem of social inequalities in modern societies; LO2: To note the theoretical polarization and diversified formulations; LO3: To problematize the formation and action of distinctive groups and "power blocs", articulating the social, economic and ideological fields. LO4: Determine social spaces and lifestyles in society in general, drawing attention to symbolic construction; LO5: Verify the plurality of theoretical strategies for dealing with problems; LO6: Present ways of operationalizing the variables used in this field of knowledge.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Theoretical-practical classes. The continuous evaluation has the following moments: participation in classes (10%), oral presentation (20%) written exam followed by an oral exam (70%).
