Being Chemistry the science that studies matter and its transformations, Physical Chemistry is within this science the discipline that establishes the principles relating to these transformations through an analysis and physical point of view, translating them into mathematical language. Thus, this course will acquire notions related to the domain of terminology used in thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, interfacial phenomena, solutions, solubility and distribution and diffusion phenomena. These fundamentals are also supported by a practical component that incorporates the learning of a system of units and conventions, as well as solid notions for interpreting and analyzing the relationship between different equilibrium properties of a chemical system, as well as behavior in a Physical Chemistry laboratory and its safety rules.

States of matter: intermolecular forces, equilibrium and phase rule; Chemical/biochemical thermodynamics: Laws of thermodynamics, chemical and phase equilibrium, internal energy, heat, work, enthalpy, entropy, Helmholtz and Gibbs free energies, ionic/electron transport; Properties of mixtures; Electrolytic and non-electrolytic solutions: ideal and real solutions, colligative properties; Solubility and distribution phenomena: principles, solute-solvent interactions, solubility of gases in liquids, of liquids in liquids, of solids in liquids, distribution of solutes in immiscible solvents; Chemical kinetics: speed, order and mechanism of reaction and kinetics of living processes; Diffusion/Dissolution: steady-state diffusion, principles/thermodynamics of diffusion, Fick's laws, dissolution; Surface phenomena: liquid interfaces, electrical properties, adsorption at liquid and solid interfaces, colloidal systems; Introduction to rheology.

Objectives
Objectives
The objective of this Course Unit (CU) is to provide basic and fundamental knowledge in the essential area of Physical Chemistry applied to biological phenomena, intending to be also a support and basilar application of other CUs in the area of Health Sciences. In this context, the following topics will be studied: States of matter, chemical and biochemical thermodynamics, chemical and phase equilibrium, electrolytic and non-electrolytic solutions, solubility and distribution phenomena, chemical kinetics, diffusion and dissolution, surface phenomena as well as an introduction to rheology.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching is based on lectures, problem-solving and class discussion, including instruments based on tutorials and other non-presential tools (e.g. moodle). In tutorial teaching the fundamental concepts of the program are deepened with the resolution of pre-announced problems and execution of laboratory experiments, allowing consolidation of the lectured contents. Assessment is carried out by either ongoing assessment or final assessment. Continuous evaluation: a) 2 written tests (70%) with an average of 8 or more; b) Class performance/performance in exercises, presentations, reports and participation (30%). Final grade = a+b = 70%+30%. The student worker who opts for continuous assessment must meet the requirements defined above. Final exam: Applies to students who opt for it (and to students who have requested a grade improvement) and covers the entire syllabus (written and laboratory exams).
