    The curricular unit of Pharmacotherapy will address the therapeutic schemes applied in the most prevalent pathologies in clinical practice, based on clinical guidelines. Thus, it is intended that students master the names of the most relevant active ingredients for the practice of the pharmaceutical profession and associate them with their therapeutic indication. The student should acquire integrated knowledge of the concepts of dosage, compliance, drug associations and interactions, contraindications and therapeutic rationality. This unit aims to empower students with knowledge and attitudes that lead to obtaining the most favorable risk / benefit relationships arising from the selection and use of medicines in a real-life setting.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    The Pharmacotherapy course aims to provide students with knowledge and attitudes that lead to the achievement of the most favourable risk/benefit relationship when selecting and using medicines. The measures and therapeutic schemes to be applied in diseases of higher prevalence in clinical practice will be addressed, supported on standards of clinical practice. It is expected that at the end of this course students will be able to: Identify drugs and their therapeutic indication; Integrate knowledge of the concepts of dosage, adherence, associations and drug interactions, contraindications and therapeutic rationality Know the standards of clinical practice for the various pathologies addressed Advise clinicians on alternative therapies, considering the benefit/risk ratio of the prescribed therapies  Mastering sources of information on medicines, to update and enable the conduct of reviews of medicines.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The lectures will be mostly expository, using clinical case examples to illustrate the therapeutic choices. In practical classes, problem-based learning will be used whenever possible and appropriate, encouraging students to discuss the different therapeutic alternatives for the cases presented (with the teacher's guidance) in class. As part of the course assessment, students will develop a monograph to support a clinical situation not covered in the core content of the course, in order to develop their problem-solving skills by consulting the most appropriate literature. This element includes the possibility of using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. In addition, for the assessment of the course, students will be encouraged to create a set of multiple-choice questions that may be included in one of the tests to be taken during the term.
