  • Presentation

    Presentation

Zootechnics and Animal Breeding II is taught in the third year of the Integrated Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine and is part of two major areas (Companion Animal Medicine and Livestock and Equine Species). This course is designed to teach the production cycle of species bred by man, executive nutritional, reproductive and health plans in a context of economic and environmental sustainability.

  • Syllabus

    Syllabus

The syllabus for this course consists of the following items. 1. Equine production. 2. Small ruminant production in the tropics. 3. Poultry production and breeding. 4. Technologies used in animal breeding or conservation of genetic resources. 5. Procedures for assessing and providing animal welfare. 6. Alternative foods for adaptation and mitigation to global warming conditions or decarbonisation. 7. Management for economic sustainability in the context of climate change.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    1. Identify the knowledge needed to solve questions in the fields of applied animal production associated with herbivorous animals (horses and small ruminants) and monogastrics. 2. Characterise the different production systems and possible management plans used for herbivores (horses and small ruminants) and monogastrics (poultry) in temperate or tropical climate regions.  3. Understand animal breeding strategies or the conservation of genetic resources in order to adequately intervene in the process of adapting to and mitigating the effects of global warming. 4. Use management concepts to make animal production farms economically viable.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The teaching/learning of theoretical classes will be conventional, using material developed in Power Point, made available on moodle and learning will be graded through conventional tests, using the structures recommended for this purpose. However, various teaching/learning techniques will be used in the practical classes: a) fieldwork, in which context "Animal Production Project I problems" will be presented, a student-centred pedagogical strategy; b) theoretical-practical classes: in this format, aspects of animal management will be developed in the context of management plans (animal welfare, nutrition, reproduction and health); c) technical visits to model farms - students identify the aspects covered in theoretical and theoretical-practical classes, relating to the management, environment and economic management of farms. The practical component will be assessed by the grading of projects, carried out by teachers and students.
