The UC of Aging and Human Development is part of a set of Curricular Units of option that aim to provide students with tools specific to future professional practice, and simultaneously critical and scientific spirit that allows them to select the best sources of information, idealize research questions and aim at methodologies that answer these same questions. THE UC relies on the recommendations of the main national and international entities, seeking a professional practice based on the best scientific evidence. The organization of classes seeks a close articulation between contents developed in previous training cycles, seeking to analyze and structure them in the face of contextual possibilities, introducing new contents and developing competencies in the face of different possibilities of intervention.

Demographics of Aging andPortugal and the World; Physiological and psychosocial processes of aging; Benefits of exercise in aging; Main recommendations of physical activity and physical exercise for the elderly; Strategies for evaluation and monitoring of risk factors, signs and symptoms of disease; Physical evaluation protocols (aerobic fitness, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, balance and mobility); Complementary means of diagnosis and medical reference; Prescription and adaptation of the recommendations of the exercise to the specific situation of each practitioner; Case studies.

Know the National and World demographics; To know the physiological and psychosocial processes of aging; Know the benefits of exercise in the aging process; To know the main recommendations of physical activity and physical exercise for the elderly; Know how to perform the evaluation and monitoring of risk factors, signs and symptoms of disease; Know how to perform functional physical evaluation to evaluate indicators related to exercise (aerobic fitness, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, balance and mobility); Know how to interpret reports of complementary diagnostic tests and associated medical prescription; Know how to prescribe in relation to the results of physical evaluation, diagnostic tests and associated medical prescription.
