Field of action and Area of action: Science of Religions. Areas of intervention: Islamic Studies; Islamic Heritage; Arab Studies. Relevance of the UC in the cycle of studies: given that the master's degree in Religious Sciences of Lusófona University approaches the religious phenomenon in a comprehensive and strategic way, an introduction to the study of Islam becomes a fundamental element for a basic preparation on the religions practised in the world. The scientific-religious and historical-cultural focus of this UC meets the need to contextualise the study of Islam in history and contemporary times.

Islam: concept, religion, monotheism Introduction to Islamic theology The pillars of Islam The foundations of Islamic practice, faith and spirituality Muhammad: Prophet of Islam Biographical elements of the messenger of Islam The Koran: Sacred Book of Islam Introduction to Koranic Studies History of Islamic Civilization Expansion, divisions and contexts of Islam from its origins to the present day Legal Culture in Islam Legal and juridical debates in Islam Islamic mysticism and esotericism Sufism and Initiatic Spirituality in Islam Islamic art The aesthetic dimension of Islam Islamic philosophy and thought The intellectual dimension of Islam Al-Andalus and Islam in Portuguese Culture Islamic heritage in Portugal and in the world Possible changes may be proposed and decided throughout the semester, taking into account the effective learning path, as well as the specific needs, of each class.

Objectives
This course aims to introduce and/or develop the students' study and reflection capacities regarding the main religious and cultural dimensions of Islam, with particular attention to the fundamentals of faith, worship and Islamic spirituality and its repercussions on the arts, Islamic thought and Portuguese and universal culture.
