    The main focus of the Scientific Research Methodologies course is to consolidate students' sustained critical thinking. Its scope of intervention is fundamental in structuring professional academic thought, providing students with the opportunity to develop theoretical work that is consistent with international quality standards through an understanding of scientific methodologies. The teaching methodology is based on seminars.

    SEMINARS Science and Pseudoscience; Demarcation Problem; Scientific Method; Philosophy of Science; Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos, Feyerabend; Militant Positivism (Carnap); Elitist Authoritarianism; Epistemological Anarchism; Application to Sound Studies; The research process. The design of qualitative research. Sonic fictions: audio-essay as a medium and as a method. Case studies on the image of speculative futures. Art as a research mode: Three case studies; Management of bibliographic sources. State of the art. Bibliographic survey and review. Reading cards and notes. Critical review. Citation and paraphrase. Standards, software and formatting. The emergence of the «point of view»; constitution of knowledge in Western thought. Belief and truth. Language, form, reality. Skepticism and the constitution of certainty: interpretation of §115 of Wittgenstein's On Certainty. Theoretical-practical research in the Media Arts: sharing of format and process based on interactive work.

    Objectives

    This is a blended learning course unit that is intended to help students make the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies in a confidente manner, by developing their academic research skills. Students will participate in thematic seminars where different aspects of the scientific research method applied to sound studies will be analysed, scrutining the relationship between different branches of sound theory and the specific materialities of the sonic object. At the end of this course unit students should be able to write a postgraduate essay or report of international academic standard.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Weekly presentation by students of problems and progress in research. Class discussion of all research topics, including textual references, sound and/or technological instances, that will allow analytical or illustrative roots to be developed by the student.
