Presentation
The main objective of this course is to provide knowledge and skills for planning, designing, carrying out and presenting (writing) a research work in the field of communication studies. The main approaches, steps, activities, methodologies and techniques used to develop a research work will be presented. The focus of the course will be on the initial stages of the research process, namely, defining the topic of the study, identifying a problem through mapping the state of the art, formulating research questions, and identifying scientific contributions to the communication and media studies fields. In terms of data collection methods and techniques, the focus will be on qualitative research. This course will be complemented with the Research Methodologies II curricular unit, which will continue the active learning of the subsequent stages of the research process and will focus on quantitative research methods and techniques.

Objectives
At the end of the Curricular Unit (CU), students will have achieved the following Learning Outcomes (LO): Describe the research process, identifying and explaining its main stages and activities (LO1); Describe the main methods and techniques for collecting qualitative data, identify their potential, limitations, and ethical issues (LO2); Analyze and discuss a scientific article (LO3); Understand and critically evaluate the potential and risk of AI in the context of R&D work (LO4); Define and explain research interests, operationalizing them into specific topics, problems, and research questions (LO5); Develop (select, design, explain, justify and write) the initial stages of a research proposal, that fits the scope of the doctoral research to be carried out (LO6). At the end of the CU, students will have developed the following transversal skills: Critical thinking; Analysis and Problem-solving skills; (oral and written) communication skills; Research & Information Management skills.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
To achieve the goals of this Curricular Unit, the contents will be taught in a theoretical-practical format, alternating between lectures, as well as demonstrative and participatory learning-teaching methods. Students must engage in the reading and discussion of recommended articles and chapters, in the exercises proposed in the classroom, as well as in the critical debates on the research projects to be designed. The assessment will be individual, using two assessment tools: a critical review of a scientific article (50%) and the writing and presentation of a pre-proposal for the doctoral research project, focusing on the initial research stages (50%).
