    Urban planning training at Lusófona University began in 1991 and, in the 1990s, research also began, as an essential factor for the development of the territory. The doctoral programme, created in 2008, has 4 curricular units covering 4 specific and essential areas for urbanism, natural environment, built environment, society and administration and general urbanism. It is from these that doctoral students are invited to reflect on different problems and deepen their critical sense. The assessment of these curricular units is carried out through 4 papers where the concepts and theories of each of the areas are developed, always in coordination with their research topic.

    The following may apply for the Doctoral Programme: a) People who hold a master's degree or legal equivalent degree; b) People who hold a B.A., people who have an especially relevant school or scientific curriculum that is acknowledged as certifying capacity to obtain this study cycle by the Doctoral Programme's Scientific Committee; c) People who have a school, scientific and professional curriculum that is acknowledged as certifying capacity to obtain this study cycle by the Doctoral Programme¿s Scientific Committee.

    Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

    The completion of the doctoral programme (1st year) aims to train the doctoral student for the practice of research in urbanism, developing skills for criticism and reflection on complex problems related to territories, always with a view to finding solutions. In the following years (2nd and 3rd years) the student develops his/her thesis in a research environment, preferably integrated in broader projects (developed within the research centre). Upon completion of the thesis and its public defence, the doctoral student is competent to investigate, develop theories and concepts that allow the improvement of urban planning practice and the development of the territory.

    The doctoral degree in Urban Planning aims to provide preparation and specific skills that allow the graduate to successfully exercise the professional activities corresponding to one of the areas of specialisation, as well as to continue their academic path, providing, in particular, the technical and scientific knowledge necessary to attend a Post-Doctoral Programme, teaching and research in the area of urban planning;

    Observations

    PhD students are required to participate in research activities and must be registered in a research centre. Integration in ongoing research project teams is encouraged. Universidade Lusófona is a member of the European Association of Schools of Urbanism (AESOP), and the urbanism training follows its guidelines.
