João Paulo Gomes is Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Universidade Lusófona and Researcher at INSA - Instituto Nacional Doutor Ricardo Jorge and researcher responsible for the study "Phylogenomic characterization and signs of microevolution in the 2022 multi-country outbreak of monkeypox virus" which was published in one of the most important scientific journals worldwide – Nature Medicine, currently with an impact factor of 87.
This publication is, and quoting Professor João Paulo Gomes, "an important milestone for Portugal given that we are the first country to sequence the Monkeypox virus that caused an important outbreak in 2022, which has already reached 32,000 cases, spread across 89 countries".
