World Physical Activity Day Celebrated with an Event
The initiative engaged the academic community in practical activities, assessments, and technological demonstrations to encourage healthy lifestyle
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
On April 9th, the atrium of Lusófona University – Porto University Centre was the setting for the celebration of World Physical Activity Day, an initiative part of the Master's in Exercise and Health Seminars. The event's main goal was to raise awareness among the academic community about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle and emphasize the importance of regular physical activity in disease prevention and promoting a longer, healthier life.
Open to the entire university community, the event provided a unique opportunity for participants to assess their physical fitness levels, understand the impacts of a sedentary lifestyle, and discover simple and effective strategies for adopting a more active lifestyle. The session took place between 14:30 and 18:30, and the program included several activities organized in thematic booths.
At the registration booth, participants began the journey by scanning a QR code, which allowed official registration and access to informational materials. The World Health Organization’s (2020) recommendations for physical activity were presented, along with the main risks associated with sedentary behaviors, highlighting the need for changes in daily habits.
Next, an area dedicated to fitness assessment was set up, consisting of four stations. Participants had their weight and height measured to calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI), performed muscle strength tests, took a cardiorespiratory fitness test, and filled out the QMov24H physical activity questionnaire. These simple and accessible assessments allowed for the identification of health risk indicators among participants.
The event also featured a practical and interactive component, with the presence of partner companies specializing in physical exercise and health. Wisify presented technological solutions for assessing physical condition, GripWise demonstrated muscle strength measurement equipment, and Teprel showcased tools for analyzing and improving physical performance. These interactions allowed participants to explore real-world applications of technology supporting safe and effective physical activity practices.
More than a symbolic celebration, this initiative aimed to inspire real and lasting changes in the behaviors of academic community members. By combining information, personalized assessments, and practical experiences, World Physical Activity Day at Lusófona University – Porto University Centre reinforced the institution’s commitment to promoting health, prevention, and well-being for all.
