The History of the Lusófona University Campus
Did you know that before becoming Lusófona University, this place had a very different history?
It was, in fact, a military barracks. The Regimento de Lanceiros n.º 2 operated here, a cavalry unit of the Portuguese Army, responsible for reconnaissance and defence missions. For decades, this place hosted military exercises, with soldiers training and horses parading through the courtyards we know today.
Campo Grande has always had a strong connection to the Army, being a strategic area in Lisbon. This regiment was part of a military tradition dating back to the 19th century, when cavalry forces were essential for security and maintaining public order.
Over time, the facilities lost their military purpose, and in 1998 the space was transformed into Lusófona University of Humanities and Technologies. From a training ground for soldiers, it became a centre for education and research, becoming the largest private university in Portugal, located in Lisbon and Porto.
And you, have you ever imagined studying in a place with so much history?
