    According to the French historian Michel Pastoureau, who is one of the greatest specialists in color symbolism, color is a cultural construction and, for human sciences, before being light, matter or sensation, colors are mental categories, cultural constructions. The topics covered will be explored and studied through dynamic activities and by carrying out individual exercises as well as group exercises and presentations, in order to provide students with the discovery of the phenomena of color and perception.

    Syllabus

    Carrying out different exercises in which distinct manual practices will be used, based on the following themes: Reflection about the psychology of color - The meaning of color The physical phenomenon of color - Newton’s disk Recognition of the color systems: RGB and CMYK - Color addition system and Color subtraction system Properties of color - Chromatic contrasts - Chromatic harmonies Johannes Itten - 12 color chromatic circle and the seven color contrasts;   Visual communication project.

    Objectives

    The main objective of the curricular unit is to enhance the development of the following skills: To encourage manual practice and increase the knowledge about graphic expression techniques and materials; To establish relationships between colors and feelings (psychology of color); To deepen the theoretical-practical knowledge of color and the different color systems to carry out visual communication exercises; To learn to recognize some chromatic illusion phenomena produced by the interaction of colors, based on Josef Albers’ experiences; To understand the structural theory of colors through the chromatic circle, the seven color contrasts and chromatic harmonies, based on Johannes Itten’s studies; To exercise and use the acquired knowledge about color to carry out a visual communication project.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Classes last three hours, and allow the development of the proposed exercises, as well as the presentation and critical discussion about the work carried out. Students will develop individual as well as group tasks. In the different exercises, various manual practices will be used, exploring the several techniques of graphic expression using different media, such as collage, acrylic paint, graphite, colored pencils, felt-tip pens, among others.
