Presentation
The main goal of the Design Technologies course is to capacitate the students to analyze and understand materialize graphic objects according to their knowledge about the different stages, means and production resources: from its composition and organization in softwares such as Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign until printing/completion. In order to do so, students will be challenged to accurately recreate the production files of several graphic objects with an increasing level of complexity: card, flyer, packaging and booklet, deconstructing and analyzing each object in order to understand how it was composed. Without the ‘constraints’ of the creativity aspect, students are able to pay more attention to the technical aspects of these existing objects.

Objectives
Objectives
The recreation of each graphic object will be structured in 3 main phases, each with its own contents and specificities: Pre-printing, Printing and Finishings. While this is not a linear process (each stage influences and is influenced by the one before and after it), it follows the timeline of producing graphic artifacts. In Pre-printing students will be taught how to prepare their document for printing, learning about topics such as color and color profiles; image quality, resolution and formats; and typographic treatment. In the end, students should be able to produce the final artwork (package) properly to be send for print. Printing stage will talk about printing technologies (digital vs. offset and other possibilities for different supports and ends) as well as materials (paper selection and usage, color). Finishings explained: cut, fold/crease, varnish/coating, embossing and debossing, stamping.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
This UC contemplates the organization of at least two masterclasses with guests designers, focused on the graphic production processes of their own projects; and two visits to printing factories located in the region of Porto (Multitema and Maiadouro, maybe VOX). It is also expected to invite one representative from a paper brand such as Inapa, Antalis or Fedrigoni; the realization of small ‘graphic showcases’ of objects brought by the teacher and the guest designers, which students are able to handle and compare. And, also, the screening of the documentary “Graphic Means”; which serves as an introduction to this course, as wells and small teaching videos/episodes related with the syllabus.
