    This CU is part of the field of Sport Sciences and Physical Education, addressing two complementary dimensions. First, it focuses on the stages of motor development during childhood and adolescence, analysing biological and contextual factors that influence the acquisition and refinement of motor skills. Second, it covers kinanthropometry, dedicated to the measurement and analysis of body dimensions, composition, and proportionality, and their relationship with movement, performance, and health. With a strong practical component, the CU promotes observation, assessment, and interpretation of real data, providing an essential foundation for training in Physical Education and Sport and preparing students for future learning in areas such as motor learning and exercise prescription.

    I. Fundamental concepts of motor development Theoretical framework and study methods. II. Stages of motor development Reflexive, rudimentary, fundamental, and specialised movements. Development of locomotor, manipulative, and postural actions. Evolution of physical and perceptual-motor capacities across the lifespan. III. Determinant factors of motor development Growth, maturation, and intra- and inter-individual variability. Genetic and environmental influences. Motor competence, physical literacy, and physical fitness. IV. Motor development assessment Principles, instruments, and practical applications. V. Kinanthropometry Protocols, methods, and measurement procedures. Anthropometry and body composition. Somatotype and body proportionality.

    Objectives

    This Curricular Unit aims for students to be able to: Understand the fundamental components of the motor development process, as well as the study methods applied in this field of knowledge. Identify the main stages of the development of motor actions, physical capacities, and perceptual-motor development across the lifespan. Recognise the influence of biological, environmental, and social factors as determinants of motor competence, physical literacy, and physical fitness. Select and apply motor assessment instruments appropriate to the objectives of evaluation. Acquire knowledge of the protocols and specificities of the anthropometric method. Evaluate different methods of body composition analysis, identifying their strengths and limitations. Interpret indicators of intra- and inter-individual body proportionality, understanding their evolution throughout the growth process.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The CU combines theoretical (lecture-based) and theoretical-practical classes, privileging methodologies close to professional practice. Continuous assessment includes two components: practical component (40%) + theoretical component (60%). Attendance of at least 70% of classes is mandatory. Approval in the course unit is conditional upon meeting the approval requirement (a grade higher than 9.5 out of 20) in each of the components (Article 31 – Grading of course units with practical and theoretical components). For examination purposes, students may conditionally pass one of the components, practical and/or theoretical, being required only to take the exam corresponding to the component in which they failed during continuous assessment.
