Class Urban Planning 1.1

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This Course Unit (CU) is the starting point for students in the study of cities. The main objective is to present this scientific area, in terms of theoretical content and practical applicability. This objective unfolds into two complementary purposes. On the one hand, the CU focuses on the study of the different elements of the physical structure of cities, framed by the main urban theories, to understand the existing urban settlements, recognize their past and think about their future. On the other hand, the CU focuses on understanding the physical form of cities to support architectural practice. It seeks to provide students with fundamental tools to address the theme of Design Studio 2.1 – project in consolidated urban context - introducing the elements of urban form as instruments for reading the territory and for conscious design of the city and its public spaces.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The CU includes fifteen classes lasting 1.5 hours each (theoretical-practical classes). The program will be transmitted through lectures, exercises, supervision and discussion of exercises in classroom, inverted classroom, educational games, promoting participation and stimulating critical thinking. Assessment will be continuous (without final exam) and based on a set of exercises. The exercises will be mainly individual (there might be some teamwork) and will focus on the fundamental contents of the CU that students will learn during the semester. For approval, active participation in classes will be required (mandatory presence in 75% of classes) which will also be subject to evaluation and an appreciation factor. Exercises have a weighting factor of 75% and class participation of 25%.
