Class Urban Planning 2.2

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This Course Unit (CU) is the extension of initiation into the study of cities. The main objective is to continue to present this scientific area, in terms of theoretical content and practical applicability. This objective unfolds into two complementary purposes. On the one hand, the CU frames the main urban theories and concepts, in their different historical, physical, cultural, and socioeconomic contexts, to understand the existing urban settlements, recognize their past and think about their future. On the other hand, the CU focuses on understanding the physical form of cities to support architectural practice. It seeks to provide students with fundamental tools to address the theme of Project 3.2 - collective housing in the city - presenting the different elements of urban form as instruments of analyse and design.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

The CU should develop the following skills in students: Historical understanding of the rupture in the formation of cities in the 20th century. Development of a critical sense about the permanence of urban utopias today. Know seminal books critical of modern urbanism. Historical and morphological understanding of the urban developments of different cities, through the study of fundamental urban plans (XIX to XX century), and the urban ideas and theories that support them. Understanding of the main theories and urban utopias: foundations and principles of intervention. Understand the Portuguese planning system and the role of the PDM. Understanding and interpretation of Porto's PDM. Critically analyse and justify design options that impact the shape of the city and people's lives. Understanding the architectural project as an act of creation of the city, which leads and is inseparable from the design of buildings.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The CU includes fifteen classes lasting 1.5 hours each (theoretical-practical classes). The program will be transmitted through lectures, exercises, monitoring and discussion of exercises, inverted classroom, promoting participation and stimulating critical thinking. Assessment will be continuous (without final exam) and based on a set of exercises. The exercises will be mainly individual (there might be some teamwork) and will focus on the fundamental contents of the CU that students will learn during the semester. For approval, active participation in classes will be required (mandatory presence in 75% of classes) which will also be subject to evaluation and an appreciation factor. Exercises have a weighting factor of 75% and class participation of 25%.
