At the international workshop “SOS Climate Waterfront”, organized by Universidade Lusófona, participants developed innovative urban plans that embraced sustainability. After weeks of intense research and design, the teams presented their proposals, demonstrating the importance of sustainable solutions in the face of environmental challenges.
S.O.S Climate Waterfront is a five-year interdisciplinary project, running from 2018 to 2023. The initiative brings together professionals from different areas to design sustainable strategies for infrastructure and urban planning, combining geographic, historical and social contexts to create resilient solutions that mitigate the effects of climate change on coastal zones.
Throughout the workshop, participants underlined the need for collaboration between architects, urban planners and other specialists to face the challenges. By bridging the gaps between professional fields, a holistic and sustainable approach can be achieved. The workshop provided a platform for diverse groups to develop open and progressive solutions, considering the cultural factors that influence sustainable practices.
One of the highlights was the three-day conference held at the prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, where renowned speakers gathered to discuss topics such as water management, cultural perspectives and climate change, and the power of art in raising awareness to environmental challenges and the promotion of sustainable cities.
The workshop also included site visits, such as the city of Setúbal, to gain a deeper understanding of the coastal areas under review. The site provided an opportunity to explore the evolution of the Portuguese coast and discover its natural and cultural heritage.
