Research proves positive effects of physical exercise on the physical and emotional health of women with breast cancer
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
Structured physical exercise can play a crucial role in the recovery and quality of life of women with breast cancer. This is the main conclusion of the scientific research conducted by Hugo Ribeiro, as part of the Master’s in Exercise and Health at Lusófona University – Porto University Centre.
The study examined the effects of an online physical exercise programme, combined with motivational interviewing, on women with breast cancer. The results revealed significant improvements in physical fitness, such as muscular strength, cardiorespiratory capacity, and mobility, as well as psychological and emotional well-being, particularly self-esteem, sleep quality, and motivation to resume daily routines.
The research also highlights that physical exercise helps reduce the adverse effects of cancer treatments, supporting therapeutic continuity and minimising symptoms such as fatigue, loss of bone density, and increased body fat.
The study led to the development of the Plenitude programme, which continues to apply these principles today through an integrated support service combining physical exercise, nutrition, and emotional support.
