Marta shares her inspiring story in adaptive surfing, the challenges of competing without sight, and her journey to becoming a four-time world champ
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
Originally from Viana do Castelo, the athlete shares how adaptive surfing transformed her life. From the very beginning, the support of her coach Tiago—whom she describes as her “eyes on the sea”—was essential. Together, they developed a unique communication code that guided her towards success in parasurfing.
In this interview, she highlights the importance of consistency, resilience, and a strong support network made up of family, friends and coaches. She also discusses the emotional challenges of competitions, such as the anxiety she felt before the final of the 2023 World Championship.
Beyond sport, she reflects on inclusion in universities and emphasises the importance of asking people with disabilities directly how they can best be supported. Surfing, she says, has given her not only titles, but also confidence, autonomy, and a global community of support.
She now dreams of representing Portugal at the Paralympic Games, while parasurfing continues to fight for recognition in this international event.
