On 21 May, the Open Days Workshop took place in the Sala dos Atos at Lusófona University – Porto University Centre, promoting the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology (FCNET) to students from the Raul Dória Vocational School. The event aimed to showcase FCNET’s academic offerings, the institution’s student support services, and the different pathways to higher education.

The session began with a warm welcome and words of appreciation addressed to the attending lecturers and the management team of the Raul Dória School, underlining the strengthening relationship with the University.

Throughout the workshop, several essential services for prospective students were presented. The Student Welfare Service explained the available support measures, including scholarships from the Directorate-General for Higher Education, agreements enabling tuition fee reductions, as well as specific grants for students from CPLP countries. Support for students with special educational needs was also highlighted.

Next, Tânia Abreu from the EVA – Internships and Active Life Department, presented the services related to curricular internships and international mobility, available to students, lecturers, and administrative staff alike.

Rita Freitas da Costa, from SIGA – Integrated Student Management Service, clarified the application procedures, the various admission routes to higher education, namely via national exams or vocational pathways, and also highlighted the merit-based scholarships awarded to students with entry averages above 16 out of 20.

The workshop also included hands-on presentations of FCNET’s degree programmes. First, the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering was introduced. Professors Nuno Correia dos Santos, Márcia Lima, and Flávio Arrais led the activity “Spaghetti Structures”, during which emblematic engineering examples such as the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, and the Burj Khalifa were discussed. Márcia Lima emphasised that “civil engineering is the future”, highlighting the versatility of the field.

In the area of Environmental Engineering, Cândida Manuel and Angelina Santos conducted the “Speed Dating with Environmental Engineering” session, addressing topics such as water treatment, air pollution, microplastics, and environmental impact, through interactive demonstrations that engaged the students.

During the session, lecturer Alexandra Galhano presented the Bachelor's Degree in Electrical and Energy Systems Engineering, with particular focus on the role of engineers in the energy transition and renewable energy solutions.

Finally, Hugo Barbosa presented the Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, through practical programming activities and experiments with Arduino, sparking the participants’ interest in the course’s technological aspects.

The workshop was a valuable opportunity for students to gain a closer understanding of university life, clarify their questions, and explore potential pathways into higher education. At the end, participants received a small symbolic gift, concluding a day marked by discovery and the sharing of knowledge.
