    Presentation

    In the Digital Animation bachelor we explore all the traditional animation techniques (painting, sand, cut-outs, puppets, stopmotion...) and also 2D and 3D so that the student can express himself through them, either in an experimental, documentary or fictional way. Digital Animation students are encouraged to explore techniques or combinations of techniques to find a new look or a new approach on a theme or a story. The Digital Animation course is designed from the stages of making a film, where each stage offers a competence and a domain of expertise.

    The Digital Animation bachelor is aimed at all the candidates mentioned in the "access conditions", but it reinforces the will to learn and work together with the taste for animation.

    - Production of animation films; - 2D and 3D modelling; - Stopmotion, 2d and 3d animation; - Set lighting for stopmotion animation; - Construction of propps for stopmotion animation - Digital illustration; - 2d and 3d character design - Storyboards, animation layouts and animatics - Scriptwriting; - Sound design for film and animation projects - VFX - Promotion and distribution; - Concept development, storyboard production and project writing;
  • Reasons for joining

    Reasons for joining

    • A group of teachers specialised in different areas of animation and techniques who have been awarded prizes at national and international animation film festivalsl. It is noteworthy that the vast majority of teachers work in professional animation
    • Programme that prepares students for the demands of a multidisciplinary market that requires technical domains and visual culture in different artistic areas.
    • Practical classes in specific laboratories that are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week so that students can develop their projects with the support of teachers and in group work on the university premises
    • Specialised training using the most modern animation technologies, such as 3Dl digital animation, motion capture and virtual and augmented reality, complemented with a strong focus on the production of animated movement through stopmotion and cartoon techniques
    • Tutors available to accompany students' work at the university outside of teaching time in course classrooms
    • An international level of the course by being part of CILECT and by the relationship with the European Re:Anima Masters

    Infrastructure and Equipment

    The Lusófona University campus has a large audiovisual and multimedia production facilities which includes spaces specifically dedicated to the area of animation, with particular emphasis on a classroom with 10 animation sets where students work on various techniques (clay, cutouts, sand, oil, puppets ...), a construction classroom with all the necessary tools and machinery plus an animation set, a 3D animation classroom with 20 PCs with Maya and Mudbox for digital illustration, a 2D classroom with 20 macs and 20 cintiqs with TV Paintand Krita, a drawing and design classroom with 23 easels, and a MOCAP laboratory for motion capture. We also have a theater with 160 seats (Sala Fernando Lopes).
  • Research

    Research

    The artistic process is a matter of research and is very present in the work that is developed in the Digital Animation course. Complementarily, animation is increasingly requested in the world of scientific research to visualize theses. As an example, the case of students who have participated in projects of veterinary medicine (The Dog of Muge https://ensina.rtp.pt/artigo/o-cao-de-muge-um-amigo-pre-historico/), biomechanics, among others. On the other hand, there are several disciplines that provide current social and ecological issues, for example, which encourage students to investigate before moving on with their film projects.

    Schedule: The course runs on a daytime basis, Monday to Friday, from 8.00-18.00.
