Faculty of Engineering visits Corno do Bico Nature Reserve
Students from the Faculty of Engineering (FE) of Lusófona University - University Centre Lisbon, accompanied by professor Ana Roís, carried out a field visit to the Corno do Bico Natural Reserve, located in the municipality of Paredes de Coura. The visit was organized within the scope of the disciplines of Botany and Zoology, in the context of the FE Eco-Schools program, with the aim of deepening knowledge about ecological diversity and sustainability.

Geopath on the Campus of Lusófona University Studies Geological Resources
This year, Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering students from Universidade Lusófona had the opportunity to take part in another phase of the Geopathway on the University Campus. The project, developed as part of the General and Applied Geology course, was supported by Professor Anabela Cruces and its main objective was to study and identify the various types of geological resources present on the Campus and analyse their application.

Renovation of Lusófona University's Organic Vegetable Garden
The organic vegetable garden on the Lusófona University Campus, which began in the 2020/2021 academic year, has recently undergone a significant makeover, thanks to the commitment and collaboration of the students and teachers of the Education and Teaching Council (CEE). This space, which has five beds, has been a meeting point for the academic community, involved in the care and maintenance of the vegetable garden. The initiative is under the guidance of Professor Elisabete Mauricio, coordinator of the Eco-Schools programme.

Research project at the Lusófona University Organic Garden
Between March and June, Lusófona University launched a new research project at its Organic Garden, aiming to explore soil properties and the microbial communities present. The research will focus on isolating soil microorganisms with antimicrobial activity with the aim of identifying microorganisms that may have the potential to combat pathogens, contributing to advances in the field of biological and pharmaceutical sciences.

Composting Project at ULusófona advances with Innovative Initiatives
The composting project at Lusófona University, led by the Faculty of Engineering's Eco-Schools Team, continues to evolve and gain prominence this year. Following on from the work started in previous years, the composter installed next to the campus vegetable garden has played a crucial role in valorising the organic waste generated in large quantities in the canteens. This waste is transformed into nutrient-rich compost, ideal for fertilising the university's organic vegetable garden.

As part of the Air Quality Management curricular unit of the Master's in Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering (FE) of Lusófona University, students have developed projects that involve in-depth research, critical analysis and treatment of real data on air quality. The aim of this work is not only to understand the current air quality situation in Portugal, but also to disseminate relevant scientific information to society.

Lecture on the Application of Air Quality and Thermal Comfort Sensors
On 5 June, as part of the Sustainability Days, Lusófona University hosted a lecture by Professor João Canto, director of the Bachelor in Electrical Engineering, on the application of low-cost sensors in monitoring air quality and thermal comfort parameters. At the invitation of the Eco-Schools programme coordinators, Professor Canto shared valuable insights into the effectiveness of commercial sensors in measuring particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

ULusófona Launches Innovative Canteen Waste Valorisation Project
Between March and June, Lusófona University began a pioneering research project aimed at valorising the organic waste generated in the campus canteens. The main aim of this study is to collect fruit and vegetable peel waste and turn it into extracts with high bioactive value, capable of showing beneficial properties for human health, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities.

Universidade Lusófona took part in the 1st International FEE - EcoCampus Conference, which took place on 26 April 2024 at the Lisbon School of Education (ESELx). Lusófona University Students Organise Technical Trip to Lousal Mine

As part of the dissemination of the results of the ERASMUS Ugly Fruits NOT! Project, the dissemination event (MULTIPLIER EVENT) “Presentation of digital tools in the fight against food waste” was held on the 22nd of May. The aim was to showcase the materials produced and the digital platform that can be used as a dissemination and training tool. This platform features content and interactive stories aimed at reducing food waste.
