ULusófona Students Investigate Biodiversity on the University Campus
As part of the Spatial Planning curricular unit and the Eco-Schools programme, Environmental Engineering students from Universidade Lusófona once again carried out field research focused on the biodiversity of trees on the university campus. The project, led by lecturer Anabela Cruces, had the collaboration of engineer Hélder Dias, who is responsible for managing Lisbon City Council's green areas.

ULusófona Students Plant Trees to Mark Environment Week
In June, Lusófona University marked Environment Week with a tree-planting initiative on campus. Students from the Eco-Schools Council took part in planting six Cercis siliquastrum trees, commonly known as Judas Trees. This activity aimed to raise awareness among the university community about the importance of native species diversity and the presence of green spaces on campus. Organic Garden Clean-Up Identifies Invasive Plant
During a recent clean-up operation in the area destined for Lusófona University's organic vegetable garden, an invasive plant was identified, known as cortadeira or erva das pampas, popularly called plumas. This species, although attractive, is harmful to the balance of the local ecosystem.

Students Explore Geological Resources at ULusófona Campus
The Lusófona University campus was the scene of an innovative practical activity in which students from the Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering courses took part in a geological survey. This exercise, part of the General and Applied Geology course, allowed students to explore and identify the various geological materials present on campus, as well as understand their application and importance in the environmental and construction context.

Risks, Effects and Prevention of Asbestos in Lecture at Lusófona University

ULusófona Reforça Compromisso de Sustentabilidade com Novos Ecopontos no Campus
On 25 May, Universidade Lusófona took another significant step towards sustainability with the implementation of five new eco-islands on campus. These ecopoints, made up of containers for recycling glass, packaging and cardboard, were installed in building D and aim to encourage waste separation among the academic community.

Lusófona University Promotes Online Training on Waste Separation
Eco-Schools at the Faculty of Engineering of Lusófona University continued its partnership with Sociedade Ponto Verde (SPV), which began last year as part of the "Where You Are Always Recycle" project. This year, online training was organised for the entire interested academic community, including Lusófona's cleaning staff, who took part via a room equipped for the purpose at the university.

Energy Saving Awareness Action at ULusófona
As part of its mission to promote sustainable practices, Lusófona University's Eco-Schools coordination organised an awareness-raising event on energy saving on 6 June. The event, entitled ‘Energy Efficiency for a More Sustainable University Campus’, was led by Professor Rui Neto and aimed at the entire academic community. During the session, strategies were discussed for reducing energy consumption and improving the sustainability of the university campus.

ULusófona Replaces Fluorescent Lamps with LEDs in New Building
Lusófona University is continuing its sustainability and energy consumption reduction strategy, which began last year, with the replacement of fluorescent lamps with LEDs in yet another building on campus. This initiative, known as ‘relamping’, aims to replace high-consumption light bulbs with low-consumption LEDs, while maintaining the original brackets.

ULusófona Students Evaluate Water in Sancha and Santo André Lagoons
As part of the project course, students from Lusófona University took part in a technical outing to the Sancha and Santo André lagoons, where they had the opportunity to apply the knowledge they had learnt in the classroom. The activity included the use of multi-parameter probes to measure the physical-chemical parameters of the water and the collection of samples to analyse microbiological indicators.

As part of the Medical Microbiology Bachelor in Biotechnology at the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering Eco-Schools programme, Lusófona University organised an awareness session on the quality of water and sand in coastal areas. The event, aimed at FE students and teachers, was attended by Dr João Brandão, a Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) researcher and head of the Mycology Unit in the Environmental Health Department of the Dr Ricardo Jorge National Health Institute.

Lusófona University in Underwater Cleaning Campaign
On 27 May, Tiago Monteiro, a student studying Biotechnology at Lusófona University and a member of the board of the Eco-Schools Faculty of Engineering, took part in one of the biggest underwater clean-up campaigns ever held. The event, attended by 842 divers, set a new record by collecting around 3 tonnes of marine waste in just 24 hours. Among the items removed were ropes, plastic and glass bottles and disposable masks.

Lusófona University Students Visit Lousal Mine on Technical Outing
On 20 June, students from the Lusófona University Eco-Council, accompanied by teacher Anabela Cruces, took part in a technical outing to the old Lousal mine. During the visit, the students explored the mine's historic facilities and the living science centre created on site. The activity emphasised the importance of rehabilitating mining areas and managing water quality. The students collected water and sediment samples, which will be analysed in Ecotoxicology and Water Quality classes, reinforcing the importance of studying natural resource management and environmental preservation.

"Ugly" fruits and veggies... NOT!
As part of the ERASMUS Project “Ugly” fruits and veggies... NOT!, we would like to share with everyone an example that we consider positive. On the Campus of Lusófona University, in Lisbon, we encourage consumer proximity to agricultural producers. Every week we have the possibility to buy, directly from the producer, fruit and vegetables, in prepared baskets that offer a varied set of products, including specimens of fruit and vegetables classified as “ugly”.
