Aqua Synapse - Impact of Deuterium-Poor Water on Health

On 27 and 28 May, the Mid-Term Meeting of the Aqua Synapse project took place in Cavtat, Croatia. Aqua Synapse is a project funded by the European Commission's European Research Executive Agency and coordinated by Professor Sergiy Lyubchyk from Lusófona University.

The main idea of the Aqua Synapse project is to establish the mechanistic basis of the positive health effects of deuterium-poor water. The isotope content of drinking water has shown possible implications for many diseases, such as cancer—while high concentrations of deuterium may induce mitochondrial dysfunction and even lead to cell death, lower concentrations (deuterium-poor water) appear to have positive effects on human health and seem to represent a safe intervention with few or no side effects—though it remains unclear at what concentrations the positive metabolic and behavioural effects become apparent. The project aims to verify this hypothesis and develop mechanisms to measure the health benefits of deuterium-poor water.

"Relamping" at ULusófona - Awareness campaign on energy savings

During June/July, as part of the action plan developed by the Eco-Schools team at the Faculty of Engineering, an awareness campaign on energy consumption management was promoted among the faculty students, where the "relamping" process was demonstrated. This action involved Professors Elisabete Maurício and Joana Lage, with support from Engineer Ricardo Pina and the ULusófona maintenance team.

The "relamping" procedure essentially involves replacing fluorescent lamps, while keeping the original light fixture, with longer-lasting LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps, thus contributing to a significant reduction of approximately 90% in total energy consumption.

By the end of the next academic year, the goal is to replace all conventional lamps with this process, making the ULusófona campus a more sustainable place.

Air Quality Assessment at Universidade Lusófona

In April 2021, the Faculty of Engineering joined a national project, MAPeAR, as a participating member, in partnership with ASPEA (Portuguese Association for Environmental Education) and ABAE. This project aims to characterise air quality nationwide with the collaboration of educational institutions. In this context, the Faculty of Engineering was provided with equipment (sensor) that continuously monitors particulate matter, specifically PM10 and PM2.5, along with temperature and relative humidity parameters. This particle monitoring device is an open-source device initially developed by the luftdaten.info project from the University of Stuttgart and now maintained by sensor.community.

The data obtained from this online data collection equipment can be consulted on an online platform, allowing monitoring of the influence of nearby pollution sources around the ULusófona campus.

This action, in addition to being an integrated action in the Eco-Schools application of the Faculty of Engineering, is also part of a research project by a group of third-year Environmental Engineering students at the Faculty of Engineering, who are conducting a study on air quality on the ULusófona campus using other complementary assessments, physical-chemical and microbiological. Conclusions from this study will be available soon, stay tuned!
